Windows 10 support has ended — here's what that actually means for your business, the real risks, and the practical options that don't involve panic-buying new machines.

There’s a comforting myth doing the rounds: that Windows 10 “end of life” means your computers will stop working on the deadline, so if yours still switch on and open Outlook, you must be fine. Both halves of that are wrong, and the second half is the one that gets businesses into trouble.

Nothing switches off. Your Windows 10 machines keep booting, keep running your software, keep looking exactly as they did the week before. What ends is security support — the quiet monthly stream of patches Microsoft sends to close newly discovered holes. Once that stops, every fresh vulnerability found in Windows 10 stays open on your PCs, permanently. The danger isn’t a dramatic failure on the deadline; it’s the slow accumulation of unpatched weaknesses that attackers actively hunt for, precisely because they know so many businesses assumed “it still works” meant “it’s still safe.”

So the honest framing is this: an end-of-support PC is a working computer that has stopped receiving its immune system updates. Here’s what that means and what to do about it.

Why this matters more than the last few Windows updates

Every version of Windows eventually loses support, and usually it’s a non-event. This one carries more weight for a few practical reasons.

  • Security is the whole point of the patches. The updates you’ll no longer get are overwhelmingly security fixes. Losing them isn’t cosmetic — it’s the difference between a known bug being closed and left open.
  • Attackers watch these dates. End-of-support software is a known soft target. Once the patches stop, any newly published vulnerability is a free pass on unprotected machines, and criminals scan for exactly these systems.

Your realistic options

The good news is that “must do” doesn’t mean “must replace everything.” There are usually four routes, and most businesses use a mix.

1. Upgrade eligible PCs to Windows 11. Many machines from the last few years can move to Windows 11 for free. This is the cleanest outcome where the hardware qualifies. The catch is that Windows 11 has stricter requirements — a recent processor, enough memory, and a security chip called TPM 2.0 — so not every Windows 10 PC is eligible, and some that are eligible get wrongly flagged as not, simply because a setting is switched off. Each machine deserves a proper check rather than a blanket assumption.

2. Extend the life of borderline machines. Some PCs are blocked from Windows 11 by genuine age, but plenty are held back only by being slow or short on memory — and those are fixable. A solid-state drive upgrade and a memory top-up can turn a tired but capable machine into a fast one, buying you a sensible replacement cycle rather than an emergency spend. This won’t make an ineligible PC eligible, but it stops you binning hardware that has years left in it.

3. Use Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a bridge. Microsoft offers a paid programme that keeps critical security patches flowing to Windows 10 for a limited window after end of life. It’s the right call when you have specialist software that isn’t ready for Windows 11, or too many machines to migrate at once. Treat it as breathing room to migrate properly — the cost climbs over time and it covers security only.

4. Replace what genuinely needs replacing. Some machines are simply too old to upgrade or worth extending, and the honest answer is a new PC. The key is knowing which ones, so you replace on evidence rather than replacing everything out of fear.

A calm, practical plan

You don’t need a huge project. You need an ordered list.

  1. Inventory every machine. You can’t plan around PCs you’ve forgotten exist. Get a full list of what’s running Windows 10, where it is, and who uses it.
  2. Sort each one into a route. Upgradeable, extendable, ESU-bridge, or replace. This turns a vague worry into a concrete, budgeted shortlist.
  3. Fix the urgent risks first. Prioritise machines that handle sensitive data, face the internet, or belong to key staff.
  4. Don’t forget backups and security around the change. Any migration is the right moment to confirm your backups are actually working and your defences are current, not just to swap the OS.
  5. Schedule the rest. Spread the remaining upgrades and replacements over a sensible window so it’s a plan, not a scramble.
